Clean Rating
There are no scenes with sex, drugs, graphic violence or typical "earth" swearing in this novel. There are numerous fight scenes and action sequences where people are injured and/or die, but it is not graphic and takes place in a virtual simulation. Swear words are fitting to the fictional world of Ethos, such as Tuskin's Fury, Batmonkeys, Holy Hippophants, etc... There are budding romances with kissing involved. There are suspenseful situations with monster alien creatures, fitting of the science fiction genre, and an overall thematic undertone of good v. evil that's suitable for tweens, teens and young adults.

I am definitely not a young adult and rarely read futuristic novels, but found myself pulled into the story. The writing is excellent and uses all of your senses to transport the reader into the story. I felt like I was experiencing the story, not just reading it.

I loved the book. Let me talk about the "hippophant" in the room. Yes, it has some strong similarities to Ender's Game but it is NOT Ender's Game. The idea of an academy for training the young for war is not just from any singly book anymore. Johan Twiss does a great job of grabbing the attention of the reader and then letting the action speak for itself.

It's somewhat predictable but in a comforting way. He uses protagonists we can relate to and believe in so we care about them. The relationships are believable but not overpowering. I gave this four stars instead of five because this was written to be a fun read and not high literature. It's a perfect YA novel and the action moves swiftly. As an English teacher, I can attest this is the kind of book that can get kids reading who didn't think they liked it.

There is no adult or vulgar language. There is violence but only described in very vague ways. The romance in it is very clean and includes one kiss. I can freely recommend this is as a great ride and something I thoroughly enjoyed.
For an opening book from a new author, this was fantastic. It grabbed me at the very beginning and kept me glued all the way through. I enjoyed the characters, the plot setup, the uniqueness of the worlds involved, and the flow of the story. Well done - I'm anxiously awaiting the follow-up books for the series.
While I tend not to read in this genre, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. The author has worked hard, and I'm excited for the second installation in the series. It's almost like a dark Asimov book.
I liked this book; interesting, creative read. It was a bit of a struggle getting through the first few chapters because of the complex characteristics of the major players. The glossary in the back of the book was helpful. The book reminded me of Ender's Game, Star Wars, Transformers, and Hunger Games, so if you like any of those stories, you'll enjoy this book.

I got the book I am sleepless sim 299 so I started reading cause why not, when I got deeper into the book I thought it was really cool for one because there's a picture of a made up bug or mammal or arachnid on the end of each chapter and the trial's and the different types of prime's like puzzler but honestly I thought legacy was pretty cool toddlers that made the pit and then downloaded all of them into the pit. all and all it was an awesome book
I love this story! The characters are great. Im a Christian Grandma. I like very SciFi and have to read YA to enjoy the stories. Most YA avoids the sex and cursing and I appreciate that. The action is good in these stories (1&2) and the story has mystery with logical, not always forseeable conclusions, which is a good thing.
Can't wait for #3.
