Edward O'Brien has loved Lydia Delaney since he was ten years old, when he proved it by pushing her into a mud puddle. When he leaves for America in 1924 to make his fortune for their future, Lydia is heartbroken, and her ruthless younger sister Myra, is still determined to have Edward at any cost.

Edward finds life in America difficult. Immigrants, especially Irish Catholics, are shunned, and the influence of the Ku Klux Klan has spread like an epidemic throughout America. When Edward is critically injured in a logging accident, Lydia immediately leaves Ireland for America. Her voyage in steerage is arduous, and an incident aboard ship, changes her and Edward’s life forever.

A mentally unbalanced Myra follows Lydia to America. When her plan of revenge is derailed by her own greed, she finds herself in danger, and in need of Lydia's help to survive.

Bringing life to the struggles of Irish immigrants in the 1920’s, “The Good Deed” will captivate readers who enjoyed Andriana Trigiani's, “The Shoemaker's Wife.”

"An intriguing book, and an enjoyable read." -S.J.S. Stanton for Chanticleer Book

The Good Deed Renee Perrault 9781493654482 Books Reviews

3.5 stars. Would have given more but I really did not like the ending. This is a dark book. I don't remember reading reviews mentioning that fact so I want to state it because I prefer books that are either lighter or have happy endings. This is not a happily ever after and I don't have much interest in seeing where the characters went from there. The mystery kept my attention throughout and it's a story line unlike any I've read before. There were a few editing mistakes but overall not too many to detract from the story. I felt the author lacked in descriptive skills regarding settings and scene details. Stay away if you are sensitive to rape scenes because these were described frequently and somewhat in detail.
Not your typical books about Irish immigrants coming over to America in steerage. The book takes place in the 1920s. Perrault does an excellent job with character development. Some of the characters, especially Edward and Lydia, you will truly love. You will hate the evil sister, Myra. Without giving away the story, I had a hard time feeling sorry for her later in the book----well almost. Myrna used people and she didn't care who she hurt. She was a master of deceit , and had so many aliases, and she lied herself out of so many situations. I'll stop here, since I do not want to give anything else away.
The ending is a cliff hanger, and I am so glad I learned that there is a sequel. I ordered the sequel, The Misdeed, an hour after finishing this book. Hard to believe that this book was self published. The book was a quick and easy read, and I found it hard to put down.
I hope that the author will continue to write. She has the start of a good series.
This book captured my attention in the first few pages and was a page turner throughout!
I really appreciated the amount of research that went into this book and the accuracy of the historical details. New York circa 1920's is my favorite era. I know very little about Oregon during this period but her details and facts have prompted me to find out more. To capture a reader's attention and actually prompt them to pursue a subject further is a huge accomplishment!
I enjoyed her writing style very much for two reasons. First, when I'm reading for pleasure, I want to enjoy the story without having to have a dictionary on hand. Secondly, her style appeals to my friend's 16 year old daughter as well as my 72 year old neighbor. Another huge accomplishment for an author.
I thought the characters were well thought out and well rounded.
The story line was nothing short of amazing! One of the most creative I've read.
I liked this book so well, I ordered two more copies as gifts plus the sequel.
The only thing that I thought was missing was the author bio. I would love to know more about this amazing author! I'm seeing a movie or mini series in the future!
When the poor immigrants of Europe came here around the turn of the 20th century, they knew it would not be easy to start a new life in a strange new country. But little did they dream that their biggest obstacle could be a family member, back home in the old country, bent on their destruction.

That's what happens here as a young girl who was always jealous of her older sister, dedicates her life to secretly following her to America intent on destroying any chance of her sister and brother-in-law's happiness in their new lives.

The younger sister is severely mentally ill, extremely cunning, and willing to steal, rob, scam, con, and even murder to achieve her aims.

Very new and different story of coming to the new land where the "streets are paved with gold."

Sadly, this is once again first of a series -- hopefully all wrapped up in only a trilogy. Second book is now available, so at least there is no painful waiting for it.
I have been looking forward to reading this book for several weeks now and just had not had enough time. Last night I decided to begin ~ thinking perhaps read a chapter or two and then go to bed. Well.............that was not to be. I loved it so much that I could not put it down and read the entire book in one sitting! Historical novels are one of my favorite genres and this was "right up my alley", with history, romance and mystery/suspense. What more could one want? Cannot wait for the sequel to see what happens to everyone. The author really makes you care about these characters and what their future might hold.
This story was fun to read about Irish immigrants seeking a better life in America. The story Injected a bit of discrimination, abuse and hardship, not to mention a crazy sister stalking the protagonists. My reason for giving the book this rating is because the writing was simplistic at times and didn't really read like Irish accents, when she was trying to achieve their inflections.
Overall I did enjoy the book, except the open ended conclusion and I look forward to more from this author.
This is a wonderful tale of young Irish immigrants forging a new life in a small Oregon town in the 1920s. The characters are fairly well developed and the writing style is casually informal. I enjoyed the book, as a whole.

Unfortunately, as is common with many self-published and indie titles, this novel would have done better with another round of vigorous editing. Much of the dialogue is expositional and unnatural, and portions of the story are repeated unnececessarily, for the benefits of the characters, and not the reader. A few words are misused, there is an abundance of misused apostrophes, and an occasional typo. Not too bad, compared to other indie-published books I've read, but enough to take me out of the story.

This is a favorite era of mine, and I liked the attention to detail that the author brought to it. Interesting historical facts and events are presented alongside the lives of the characters, in a pleasing way.

I wish the novel had been more thoroughly edited and even redrafted, but I also understand the nature of the process; authors are eager to put their work out there, and it is easy to overlook many things. Otherwise, an enjoyable read.
